This project aims to expose local kids to sailing while teaching them valuable and useful (if not life-saving) skills. To expand the current sailing program at the SMYC to allow local kids access, the project proposes the purchase of 6 new Lasers sailing boats and 5 Pico’s (boats). The old sailing equipment was damaged during the passing of hurricane Irma and there placement boats will allow the SMYC to expand the program to reach disadvantaged local kids. In addition, the SMYC will collaborate with local swimming clubs in the Swim-to- Sail program the aim is to teach children to swim as a precursor to sailing classes and exposure to the marine industry in general.
The Sint Maarten Yacht Club Association (SMYC) is a non-profit organization focused on promoting sailing on Sint Maarten. It has been actively teaching sailing for over 30 years.
